How To Memorize Scripture
Confession. I haven’t memorized scripture since I was in college… When I was memorizing scripture back then it was only because I had a Bible quiz or test. It wasn’t because I wanted to most of the time.
As I have been listening to sermons and studying the Bible, I have been convicted about memorizing scripture. Starting this month I will be memorizing either a verse or a passage each month.
The law of his God is in his heart;
Psalm 37:31
his steps do not slip
God commands us to read His word and to store it up in our hearts!
Here are some tips on how to memorize scripture.

Read It Over Several Times
Did you know that you need to read something at least 7 times (the more the better!) before it gets stored in your long term memory? I decided to intentionally read the verse or passage 10 times each everyday for a month.
Write It Out
Writing it out helps me tremendously with memorizing something. Even in school I had to write everything out if I really wanted to remember something.
Flash cards are great ways to write them out and carry around with you to memorize it. You could even write the passage on a pretty piece of paper and display it somewhere you can see it often. I’ll be displaying mine on the fridge.
Pray About It
Ask God for wisdom and help with memorizing scripture. Look for scripture about memorizing scripture and understand the importance of it.
Study It
Don’t memorize the words, but memorize it by understanding what it really means. Highlight, look up words, and pray through it to truly understand. You could even picture it or visualize it in your mind. I am a very visual person so pictures help me significantly.
Accountability
Why not make scripture memorizing more fun by doing it with friends? Two friends and I decided to take on this challenge and I think about how Iron sharpens Iron. We can keep each other accountable and have fun with it!
Do you have any tips on memorizing scripture?
Nice tips. I’m off to try them out! Thanks.
Thank you! I just memorized Romans 8:31-39 in less than a week using the same method 🙂 I hope it will be helpful to you!
