How To Be A Godly Woman

How To Be A Godly Woman

Let me introduce you to my favorite book about becoming a godly woman. The book is called A Woman After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George. I got this book from my MIL (mother-in-law), and it changed my life.

If I had to pick someone I wanted to be like, I would pick my MIL. She is a SAHM (stay at home mom), pastor’s wife, and the modern day Proverbs 31 woman.

I respect my MIL a lot so when she gave me the book by Elizabeth George, I read it and studied it. It is such a great book that I have decided to read it every year in January.

This is my second year reading this book. If you look in the book you will find notes and highlights all though out the book.

It’s so good that I let my friends borrow it and gifted it to newly married women.

Set God as 1st Priority

What a difference it makes when you have your priorities in order. It makes a difference in every area of your life. Marriage, raising children, ministry, career, you name it!

In the beginning of this year, I set and wrote out my top 5 priorities this year. Here are my 5 listed.

  1. God – Spending time with God and growing spiritually
  2. Husband/Marriage – My husband (Ben) is my #1 human priority
  3. Children – My two girls are my #2 human priority
  4. Serving – Church ministry, hosting, and blessing others when things arise
  5. Blogging/Education – Blogging to bless other women and to encourage

I won’t go in detail about my priorities in this blog post, but knowing your priorities is huge. It helps you plan out your day and saves you time. It’s easier to say “No” because you know what your priorities are.

Pray About Everything

To live a godly life means we should be in constant communication with God. I started to pray about everything. Even the smallest of things.

Before I make plans or commit to something I pray and ask God first. Sometimes I have to say no to good things because I don’t feel at peace about it.

However, when I do say yes to something (after praying) I fully commit and pour my heart and energy into it.

We are to consult with God regarding our decisions, thoughts, words spoken, or responses.

Elizabeth George

Spend Time In His Word

The best way to get to know someone is to spend time with them. If we want to become godly women, we must get to know God.

Read Scripture

Start making a habit of daily reading of the Bible. I recommend first thing in the morning, but whatever time works for you is fine too. Treat it like an appointment. Be there and commit.

Currently, I do my devotions everyday at 12:30 p.m. That is the time when my toddler and my infant’s nap time overlaps. I made a habit and commitment of doing my devotions then.

Being a mom of two small kids, it can sometimes be pretty challenging to fit your devotions in, especially if they are newborns, or not sleeping through the night yet.

I TOTALLY get the exhaustion and the survival mode of just trying to make it through the day. However even if it’s a little bit, it will totally be worth it.

Something is better than nothing. The only “wrong” time for having your time alone with God would be no time.

Elizabeth George

Baby wake up in the middle of the night? Try reading the Bible to your baby while rocking him/her. I’ve had times when I’m reading or praying at 5 a.m. because of my baby waking super early (and I’m not a morning person lol).

Memorize Scripture

Meditating on His word and storing them up in my heart has made a huge difference in my life.

If you don’t know how to memorize scripture or want to improve on it, check out my post How To Memorize Scripture.

Corrie ten Boom, who survived the holocaust, was an exceptional example. Her father taught the importance of memorizing scripture, and how every memorized verse is a tool that God himself can use through individuals (George, 1997).

Topical Learning

One of my favorite things to study and learn is to pick a topic and grow in that area. For example, last year I wanted to be more patient.

I studied about what God has to say about patience in the Bible. I read books regarding the topic. Listening to podcasts and sermons were other things I did to learn about patience.

By the end of last year, I could look back and really see how God helped me grow with patience. I still have a long way to go, so this year I am continuing my education on patience.

Another topic I am learning about this year is selflessness. God has been convicting me of how selfish I am. Growing up as an only child, I never really had to share and learn important lessons on selflessness.

You can say that selflessness is my learning theme this year. I’m sure God will be stretching me in this area as I pray He does so. It will hurt but they are good growing pains to be more like Christ.

Thank God For Everything

My home has several decorations that include something about thankfulness. Above my door I have a wall sticker that reads be grateful. I also have a plaque that talks about thanksgiving, and a canvas that says Thankful.

No matter good or bad, I want to be thankful for everything in life. I don’t want to take anything for granted! I want my children, friends, and others to see me model a life of thanksgiving.

It’s too easy to not be content in this world, but God instructs us to be content. I’ve learned many lessons about contentment over the years, and they were not easy.

After I had my first born we lived in a 800 sq feet 1 bed room apartment for 18 months. I didn’t get to decorate a nursery before my baby arrived, nor did we get to put essential baby items in our home because of the lack of space.

We signed the lease to our apartment right around the time we found out I was pregnant, so there was no backing out of it. Living in a small 1 bed room apartment with a baby was not easy, but through it I learned about minimalism, and it became a new life style for me.

Through not being content I was being convicted about how blessed I was. As Americans we are very wealthy compared to the rest of the world.

There are mothers who don’t even have a roof over their heads, moms who can’t provide basic food for their children, families who live in a small hut with 8 children, and people who never have slept on a bed.

How foolish I was to not be content about living in a 1 bedroom apartment with my family of 3 (plus a dog at the time).

As I’ve been growing in Christ, I have been thankful for everything. I stop to pray throughout the day for anything that comes to mind. Food, home, family, clothing, car, music, and the list goes on.

Serve In A Ministry

Don’t worry, I’m not telling you to go out of your comfort zone right from the beginning. You can use your hobbies and talents to serve God.

As a SAHM I like to host play dates in my home to bless other moms. I also host families and people from our church. Giving gifts for the pregnant mothers at our church is another way I like to serve.

There are many ways you can serve! Maybe you have the gift of making a quilt. Why not make quilts and donate them to a pregnancy center? Think about what you can do and serve!

What do you do to become a more godly woman?

  • I have heard of the book but have never read it. Yet, after your overview, I do believe I need to put it on my list. This quote will stick with me: “Something is better than nothing. The only β€œwrong” time for having your time alone with God would be no time.” (Elizabeth George) This is so true. I love your idea about reading scripture to your infant. Number one–you are planting seeds in your little one. Number two–God will bless your faithfulness.

    • Thank you Jenna πŸ™‚ Yes, it is so important to get to know God so we can be more like Him. I have a long way to go, but I am going to do my best to spend time in scripture every day so I can grow!

  • I loved this post because I think it is important for women to learn what other women do to stay Godly. I keep in my heart the Proverbs 31 to help me be a Godly woman. Thanks for sharing!

  • This was so convicting and uplifting! Set an appointment and commit. Yes! I will be ordering this book and reading it too! I think one thing that I have started doing to become a more godly woman, is how I try to intentionally talk about God to my children. I grew up in a secular home and incorporating Jesus in my daily speech and my thankfulness to him is sometimes hard to express. I also love the visual reminders of thankfulness! Going to be copying that as well! Thank you!

    • Thank you Jessie! Your comment was such an encouragement to me πŸ™‚ I love how you are intentional with your children about talking with them about God. That is so wonderful!!

  • Loved reading your post. It is an everyday reminder that to be godly woman we need to immerse in His word. Gratitude is an important part we all need to remember Sometimes I have to remind myself intentionally that God has sustained me and met my needs..

    • Thank you Jessy πŸ™‚ Yes, I need constant reminders throughout the day. It is so easy to get distracted! We just need to remind ourselves and remember that our life means nothing without God.

  • I just added this book to my list! I love the idea of picking a topic or area of growth to study. Do you have any other books you would recommend? Thanks for sharing, Hannah.

    • Thank you Sara! I also recommend The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace. I haven’t read the entire book yet, but the first few chapters I’ve read were pretty good πŸ™‚
